IKA BUTONI Black and White Jacket - Great jacket suited for elegant occasions

Black and white contrast is particularly popular in the coming spring/summer 2013. However it is not easy to find a minimalistic, dimensional sense jacket in black and white which can help you to elongate your body proportion.

Designer IKA BUTONI is exposing part of the wearer’s skin tone through grid approach, by creating the effect of outstanding blocks, which make the ‘no color’ garment into infinite visual effects, and this kind of design is undoubtedly a brand new exploration of the fashion structure.

IKA BUTONI Black and White Jacket

Design: IKA BUTONI straight shoulder, stand-up collar jacket with zipper in the middle. In particular, cuffs are opening and closing with zips.

Clipping: IKA BUTONI has always been adept to neat tailoring which can fully show the characteristics of metropolitan women. The jacket has different choices in long sleeves, three quarter and half sleeves. The clothes also have different length. Short jacket is cut above the waist, cool and epicene; long jacket was caught in at the waist and brings more femininity to the shape.

Fabric: Upscale PU and net.

Thousand knots and love - Macrame - IKA BUTONI

IKA BUTONI has two series for wax cord accessories:

Whichever the piece chosen, they are presented to the wearer with Thousand Knots and Love.

The ancient knotting technique - Macramé - has long evolved into today’s decorative craft.
Macramé is the art of tying hundreds of knots together to complete a unique piece of art. Each knot is infused with the feeling of the vibrating view of the wave of the sea... finished in the vast calm openness of the view of the mountain. Thousands of knots later.

This Wearable Art is an art of patience and lots of love... It can be worn dressed up or down, for the occasional or everyday wear. While the waxed twine is durable, lightweight in nature, and comfortable against the skin. The length is adjustable with a loop and ties at the back or finished with silver hook closure. These colorful and unique shape artworks combine different knots together condensing effort of designers and craftsmen. Complex grain lines were carefully woven by the artisans, and turned into modern stylish patterns, adding auspicious ornaments woven to create unique patterns.

Some of these macramé were adorned with stones such as CHRYSOCOLLA CUPRITE, which believed to have the Healing powers - blending the energies of masculine and feminine, of power and gentleness. The stones associated with serenity, tranquility, peace, patience, tolerance, acceptance, unconditional love, meditation, calmness, hope gentleness and sensitivity. It assists us in dealing with female relationships, mother, sister, daughter, wife or a female partner. It is also said to be helpful in dealing with major problems: irrational anxieties and terror from past traumas. JASPER – stimulates sexuality and fertility, combats exhaustion, symbolizes will power. AGATE - soothing a calming stone and helps facilitates acceptance of one’s self. It also enhances mental function as they improve concentration, perception, and analytical abilities, leading to practical solutions. It encourages speaking one’s own truth and can also stimulate memories. While other stones - Some create very special energy, strong, like an amulet of power.

Artisans use cotton waxed cord or traditional and environmental friendly materials and techniques of weaving. With unique artwork, the effort is difficult to assess. With their creative input surrounded by the paddy fields, the Balinese Maestros put their imaginations to reality, to be appreciated by beautiful women across the oceans.

Woven Scarves - IKA BUTONI

Woven Scarves - IKA BUTONI
Woven Scarves - IKA BUTONI
TI was founded by Budiyono, a textile graduate from the Institute of Textile Technology (ITT), Bandung – Indonesia.

Since 1989, from one handloom, Budiyono began to handweave. His specialty lies in the traditional weaving techniques, combined with innovation from modern art to create a unique and special pieces made by the handloom.

In 1995 he began to focus in producing hand-woven silk pieces..

He loves his work as a textile designer, challenging himself to create new designs and unique hand-woven scarves. He believes a piece that has been hand-woven must have a special uniqueness, obtained from a combination of a sense of art with his knowledge in textiles.

In general, people's perception of silk cloth is its smooth and soft touch. But TI just wanted to highlight various unique textures as special characteristics.

In early 2009, TI had a new innovation by combining some natural dye silk yarn to create various shades of color on each texture of a hand-woven item.

One of the top achievement is when our silk hand-woven scarves obtained international acclaim through an international event ’ASEAN Silk Fabric and Fashion Design Competition 2009’ in Bangkok, Thailand.

In these two events, TI won a total of two awards:

~ TOP AWARD from HM. Queen Sirikit of Thailand
~ The 1st Royal Trophy Award from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative of Thailand

IKA BUTONI Drape Silk Chiffon Batik

IKA BUTONI Drape Silk Chiffon Batik
IKA BUTONI Drape Silk Chiffon Batik
Draped Silk Chiffon Batik, multi panelled mid-length top with Kimono style cross over front design, featuring elbow length sleeves with cuffs that may be folded up to further to give a different and more relaxed effect. Part of our IKA BUTONI INTERNATIONAL casual range.

The semi sheer fabrics make this garment light and airy, allowing ease of movement and can be layered with other Butoni garments to create new wearing combinations. The intricate dyed patterns are created using the technique of Batik. This long and masterful process makes pieces using this method of transfer and dye, such a piece of art.
IKA BUTONI Drape Silk Chiffon Batik
IKA BUTONI Drape Silk Chiffon Batik
The process of Batik – hot wax is used as a drawing tool, it is used to block out areas of a material, and in this case silk chiffon fabric is the base material. The parts that have been decorated with the batik are resistant to dye transfer, but the remaining fabric can be, section by section layered with different dye and the patterns created can be overlapped using the batik method. This means that several colours may be used creating new unique combinations in a garment.

An amazing process, which has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Ika’s prints resemble ancient motifs, with a culturally inspired twist, the cutting with a relaxed flowing feel creates a rather interesting silhouette.

The Batik technique can be found in many of IKA BUTONI’s products.

Each panel has been creatively over-locked so that it is visible on the exterior of the garment, making a big statement. Notice the hem flows with the mixed panels which, with the asymmetric shape, is part of the creative cutting. A desirable piece is featured. The combination of over-locking, cover seaming, zigzag stitching and finishing details in a focal colour gives a subtle yet raw edge to this design. Combined with asymmetric joining panels and mix & match print work a fun and youthful edge is given.

The Warrior - Johannesburg, South Africa

Warrior - Fashion Guru in South Africa
Blue as clear as the skyline of Africa
Ika was invited by the Fashion Guru in South Africa, Dawn Demetriades to launch IKA collection in Johannesburg.

The original collection ' Gladiator ' was renamed ' Warrior '.

Seven team members of Butoni Limited and Hong Kong based international photographer Raymond Chan left for the show. Although it was a long and tiring trip, it was well worth it.

Raymond had the chance to capture the mood, the scenery and the culture of the Soweto and the Sulu Village. With the 4 African models, we started early at 4.00am, trying to capture the morning sun, and ended savoring the golden sunset.

We left a memorable mark on the land, with a Full House to the Evening Gala Show, attended by the most beautiful people of Africa.

Five percent of the Sale of IKA merchandise went to help the Aids Foundation in Africa.

IKA BUTONI Interviewed by M Style

M Style Interview

IKA BUTONI - Mira Mall - M Style

IKA BUTONI, a member of Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association, has been showing her work at Hong Kong Fashion Week since 1985. Her work is available in 35 different countries, including Japan, France and the States. This year, IKA is opening her first ever retail shop at Mira Mall.

Mira: What’s fueled your passion in fashion all these years?

IKA: I loved painting during my childhood. In 1976 the fashion scene was taking off and Hong Kong Fashion Week started to become the most outstanding event in Asia. I felt it was a good decision to take the path of fashion designing.

Mira: Embroidery is often found in your designs, why do you love this element so much?

IKA: Embroidery is part of the traditional art and culture, but now the younger generation is less interested in it. Through my collection, I would like to bring awareness to the world, for example, the MIAO Collection which I created to highlight the beauty of the MIAO Culture.

Mira: Where do you draw inspiration from?

IKA: I firmly believe that I draw inspiration from my travels and interactions with people from different lands. They give me ideas and sprinkles of creation.

Mira: Your work is found all over the world, why choose Hong Kong to open your first retail shop?

IKA: My designs used to reach customers through wholesalers, but I’ve always thought how wonderful it would be to meet them face to face. So I started thinking about opening a retail shop. Hong Kong, it’s where I started my path in fashion so I open my first retail shop here.

Behind the Label IKA BUTONI - Afrique - Hannah Hodson

Who is behind it?

Hong kong-based, Indonesian-born Ika Butoni started her eponymous fashion label back in 1983. With outlets on five continents, the brand has made a name for itself thanks to the exceptional embroidery and unique cuts which, Butoni says, are inspired by her travels and ‘interactions with people from different lands’. Her latest collection, Afrique, features pieces adorned with macramé and shells, and others made from traditional Indonesian ikat prints.

Afrique - IKA BUTONI
Afrique - IKA BUTONI
Why we love it: Butoni has created a beautiful mélange of cultures. We are presented with colourful, tailored, contemporary garments infused with the history and culture of faraway lands. A member of the Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association, she has remained artistic while taking a different path to that of her contemporaries. We wouldn’t recommend the headpieces for a trip to the shops, however.

What we’d pick: the multicoloured tunic top (HK$3,000), incorporating an unusual clash of colours and hand-worked piping, and the leopard-point leggings (both left; HK$1,000), although we’d recommend wearing them separately. We also like the blue jersey, graphic-print trousers (HK$1,000) with red, white and blue top (both far left; HK$3,000). The ornate tribal-inspired necklaces are HK$3,000 each and the headpieces are made to order.

Where can you get it? Ika Butoni is in The Mira hotel, 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2311 7238.

Out of Africa

“Afrique” is the title of Ika Butoni’s new Spring-Summer collection. The designer has been particularly inspired by the proud Tuareg people, Muslims known also as “the blue men from the desert” thanks to their indigo-blue clothing. The mixture of African colours with Tuareg art is the foundation of Ika’s collection, which takes the idea of combining differing styles and uses it to achieve joyously vivid creations that are also both comfortable and extremely attractive. “Afrique” offers garments that are created using stretch fabrics and knits, beautified by an abundance of bold patterns, adorned with macramé, shell stones and miniature pearls, all perfectly ready-to-wear and matchable with brilliantly printed leggings.
